"Artificial" or "constructed" languages are languages intentionally devised, in opposition to "natural languages" such as English that have developed spontaneously over time. There are various motivations for people to invent a language. Most artificial languages are intended for use as international auxiliary languages, while others were created for people with special needs (see Languages for the handicapped), for use in fiction (fictional languages), or for scientific experimentation (logical languages). To date, no constructed language has attained official status in any country. The most spoken artificial language is Esperanto, probably followed by Interlingua. Among fictional languages there are Klingon, which is popular among fans of the Star Trek television series, and Sindarin and Quenyan, invented by J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings). |
