Quechua is spoken in the Andean highlands by less than 13 million people. It originated in the Peruvian highlands, and in the 15th c. its geographical range was quickly enlarged by the Inca conquests. Spanish missionaries used it as a language of evangelization, contributing to its further spread. Today it is giving ground to Spanish, although efforts are being made to introduce bilingualism in education. Quechua is an inflecting, suffixing language, and many word roots are both nominal and verbal. |
