Erzya is one of the two dialects of Mordvinic (the
other being Moksha), the third largest Finnic language after Finnish and Hungarian. In fact, native speakers of Erzya and Moksha do not have a common name for their
(Mordvinic) language. Erzya is spoken in the Volga region, more specifically in the eastern part of the republic
of Mordovia or Mordvinia in Russia, by some 500,000 people. The Mordvinic language is losing ground to Russian:
about two thirds of Mordvinians still speak Erzya or Moksha. Literature in Erzya includes folk songs and legends. It is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. This is an agglutinative language and features vowel harmony. |
