Galician is a Romance language spoken by the inhabitants of Galicia, a region in northwestern Spain. It may be regarded as the same language as Portuguese. In medieval literature, there is no clear distinction between Galician and Portuguese. Galician was the standard language for lyrics for poets coming from the whole Castilian reign poets during the 14th c. The language declined as a literary means of expression until it experienced a revival during the 19th c. when, again, achievements in poetry were much more remarkable than in prose. The most prominent literary figure in Galician is Rosalía de Castro. Galician vocabulary and pronunciation was largely influenced by Spanish. |
