Romanian is a Romance language (evolved from
Latin) spoken mainly in Romania and Moldavia. Its standard form is based on the Daco-Romanian dialect.

Written records in Romanian date back to the 15th century. Extensive literature was published until a period of decadence unter Ottoman rule, starting in the 18th c. During the next century, Romanian experienced a revival influenced by German philosophy and French culture. Throughout the 20th c., abundant literature in this language was published.

Romanian features the traits common to all Romance languages. In particular, it lost noun
declension but kept a rich verb system, featuring a variety of tenses. Due to its geographic situation in the heart of the Balcans, Romanian vocabulary contains many loanwords from neighboring languages, including Slavic languages, Turkish, and Hungarian. Since many Romanian words have cognates in Albanian, it is believed that the language the Dacians spoke before the introduction of Latin in the country was related to that language.
