A language of North Indo-Aryan descent. It is spoken by Roma and Sinti Gypsies in many countries, the majority of which live in Eastern Europe. Romany is split up numerous dialects and has never attained official status in any country. Being a language of a rich oral tradition, almost no written works were published in Romany until the 20th c. In 1990, a decision was made on an alphabet as a first step toward the standardization of a written variety. The language has similar features to those of its modern linguistic relatives. The declension is based on two cases (direct < nominative and oblique < genitive), and the verb system has three moods. Its vocabulary varies a great deal from one dialect to another, since Romany speakers borrowed many loanwords from neighboring languages in their migration west. |
