Sanskrit is a language of the Indo-Aryan family, almost extinct as a first language. Written evidence of Sanskrit dates back to the year 1800 BC. This is the language in which the sacred Brahmanic Rigveda texts were written. It was standardized by Panini in the 5th c. BC. Literature in Sanskrit flourished until the year 1000. India scholars still use the language today. Sanskrit is a highly inflected language. Noun declension features eight cases. In Sanskrit there are many ways to form new words by way of derivation and composition, and it as been argued that any imaginable notion can be expressed in this language. Today, only certain complex languages such as German and Esperanto have similar resources for word formation. |
