Sranan, a.k.a. Sranantonga or Taki-taki, is a creole language spoken by most people in Suriname, i.e. by some 100,000 persons. It emerged from a pidgin spoken by African slaves in plantations owned by the Portuguese. After the territory was taken over by the British, Sranan became an English-based pidgin. It also contains elements from Portuguese and Dutch, with some native American and African contributions. In the late 1950s, literature in Sranan started to emerge. Official spelling rules were passed in 1962, which were reformed in the 1980s. The language is, nevertheless, not being used in education, which is dominated by Dutch. Sranan has a simple morphology and vocabulary limited to several thousand terms. There is no inflection or declension. |
