Cherokee is an American Indian language, the only member of the Southern Iroquoian family. It is spoken by the Cherokees, who originally inhabited Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas, but migrated to Oklahoma in the 19th c. It is written in a syllabary devised in 1821. Newspapers in Cherokee have been published for one hundred years, but written language has been losing ground to English. Cherokee is a polysynthetic language. The most important parts of speech are verbs, and extensive use of prefixes and suffixes makes it possible to create a large number or inflected forms. |
