Korean is probably an isolated language, although some similarities exist to Japanese and to the languages of the Altaic family. It is spoken by more than 70 million people as a first language. Written evidence of Korean dates back to the 15th c., when the Korean alphabet was invented, but most scholars continued to write in Chinese until the 20th c. After World War II, literature in Korean experienced a revival. This is an agglutinative language. Word and sentence build-up is much like in Japanese, but, like French, Korean no longer uses accent to distinguish words. |
