Polish belongs to the western branch of the Slavic family of languages. It is spoken by 39 million people in Poland. Until the 15th c., the only literary language in Poland was Latin. Despite the aggressions to the country by neighboring countries and in spite of the large distance to the cultural centers of the Western world, Polish literature proper managed to maintain great variety and a high level of quality. Polish is an inflected language. Its vocabulary includes loanwords from Latin, German, Czech, Belarusian, Ukranian, Russian, French, and English. Being a Slavic language, it has palatal consonants, but in contrast to the rest of those languages, but it has two nasalized semivowels. It is written in a modified form of the Roman alphabet. |
