Not all pieces of information are equally difficult. We need to spend more time in certain items than in others. This is why we use group flashcards by difficulty. The method we use is based upon the Leitner system, devised in the 1970s by German science popularizer Sebastian Leitner. Other researchers (Pimsleur 1967; Mondria et al. 1994) have proposed similar methods.

Leitner's simple method offers you many benefits:

  -   Your freedom of choice is protected. Since flashcards are grouped into different levels of proficiency, this gives you the freedom to decide on what to learn: At every moment, you can choose between reviewing long-known stuff or reviewing the most difficult cards.

-

Immediate feedback is more effective. Experimental evidence suggests that testing with feedback is superior to conventional reviews (Bjork 1988; Carrier and Pashler 1992; Cull 2000; Kuo and Hirshman 1996).

  -   Visible results enhance your motivation. Your current status of knowledge is made apparent by the number of flashcards contained in each Box. This makes this method incorruptible as well -- self-deception is hardly possible.

  -   Recall failure is addressed. The Project method takes no pity on the flashcards you fail to answer correctly: they are demoted to the first Box of the Project. This way, they have to climb their way up the Boxes again, and your success is almost guaranteed.

  -   Sorting and messing up are possible. Unlike vocabulary lists for example, flashcards can be rearranged. This has been found to improve recall (Vázquez-Abad and LaFleur 1990).

  -   Stress-free learning. Worries about one's personal image are a common cause of stress. This is true for children as well as for adult learners. Using the system described above, the user can progress at their own pace, being allowed to concentrate on the learning material itself rather than on extraneous factors.

  -   Self-teaching skills are fostered. With this system, the students are confronted with situations in which they have no teacher to turn to when they do not know an answer. Success will gradually help them get confident of their own skills.
